Magnolia liliiflora, often called the Mulan magnolia, is a deciduous shrub or small tree admired for its striking, goblet-shaped flowers in rich shades of purple, pink, or reddish violet. Blooming in mid to late spring, often after the leaves emerge, it avoids the worst of early frosts and makes a long-lasting ornamental statement.

This species grows to about 3–4 metres tall and wide, with a dense, rounded habit. It thrives in full sun to part shade, in moist but well-drained soil with some shelter from harsh wind. It is tolerant of a range of soil types, including heavier clay, as long as it doesn’t become waterlogged. Cold-hardy to around –15°C once established — ideal for most settled parts of New Zealand.

Edible Uses:
The flower buds of Magnolia liliiflora are edible and have long been used in parts of China and Southeast Asia as a fragrant, peppery addition to teas, pickles, and stir-fries. The flavour is floral and slightly spicy. Buds are usually harvested just before opening. Flowers of this species are not as commonly consumed as M. denudata or M. coco, but they are still safe to eat in moderation and used in traditional recipes. Always identify with certainty before consuming.

Germination and Cold Stratification:
Seeds require 3–4 months of cold, moist stratification to germinate. Clean off any remaining red pulp and sow in moist medium at 1–5°C. After chilling, move to a warm location (20–24°C); germination may begin in 4–8 weeks but can be staggered over months.

Outdoor Stratification Tip:
Magnolia liliiflora seeds can be sown outdoors in autumn in pots or trays. In areas with cool, damp winters, this natural method provides sufficient chilling. Protect containers from rodents and heavy rain. Germination will begin as temperatures rise in spring.
